Florrie | Little White Lies

Florrie has been on the periphery of pop since 2010. Her first release, Introduction, was released non gratis that year, followed by 2 more self-financed EPs. The extended vanity project came to an end earlier this year when she signed to Sony, which is good news for the singer/songwriter/drummer on Girls Aloud's The Promise because her sideline in modelling can't fund a music career forever (as I'm sure Karen Elson and Milla Jovovich will tell you). It's either a coincidence or the sign of being on a major label that Little White Lies is her punchiest offering to date. Get punched:

The plastic bags in the video finally answer Katy Perry's immortal question from her hit Firework, and I'm sure the environmentalists among you will be up in arms, but so will her fans, as LWL is an arms-in-the-air, hips-in-the-next-room, boobs-in-the-pantry pop smash in the waiting. And it's out next month. 

Girls Can't Catch | Keep Your Head Up

With an intro that sounds not too dissimilar to Sam Sparro's Black & Gold, you'd be forgiven for thinking Keep Your Head Up was another naff pop song sampling a classic. And certainly, with auto-tuned verses and a truly awful band name like Girls Can't Catch, the new girlband on the block won't be without their doubters. But anyone who was left weeping at the news of Girls Aloud's one-year hiatus or the end of The Saturdays' Work Tour will find comfort in this track's surging chorus and kitsch lyrics like 'I've had all sorts of fantasies, even romantasies'. Who cares what a  romantasy is. Look! There's one of the girls from Hope! X Factor connections as well? A sure-fire hit I'd say. 4/5.

Gabriella Cilmi | Sweet About Me

It's hard to believe that Australian Gabriella Cilmi is only 16-years-old. Her voice, which has lazily been compared to that of Amy Winehouse, is distinct and soulful in its own right, sounding even riper than Camden's finest. Another surprise is that she co-wrote the track with Xenomania, the hit factory behind the sound of Girls Aloud, and the Summery, rootsy vibe of Sweet About Me makes for a welcome addition to the pop scene. 5/5.

Sugababes | Denial

This time last year, the trio and Girls Aloud teamed up to create a new species of cheese in the form of their cover of Run DMC and Aerosmith's Walk This Way for Comic Relief. Now they're back to the day job of working against each other, both bands release single 3 from their respective albums this week. Both are strong songs, but Denial, accompanied by another Sugababes is-it-brilliant-or-just-odd? video, deserves to climb higher. With its rock-meets-reggae tune and infectious chorus, this is up there with the the band's best. 4/5.
